The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly,  Hon.  Adamu Usman, Tuesday vowed that the lawmakers would not succumb to any pressure to impeach the state  governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu.

He told journalists at a news conference in Minna, that there was no reason to impeach the governor, who was believed to be in trouble with the presidency for not backing a faction of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) headed by Plateau State Governor, Chief Jonah Jang.

Usman, who also denied reports that the lawmakers had been given N70 million each to impeach the governor,  said the legislature was shocked to read the reports that the lawmakers had been suborned to impeach Aliyu.

"The report is not true and cannot be true, especially at this time when the governor is living up to the expectations of the people of the state and that of the State House of Assembly.

"As far as the Niger State House of Assembly is concerned, no member has been approached either individually or collectively as regards the issue of impeaching the Niger State governor neither have we received or have we been offered any amount to the tune of N70 million each to induce us towards proceeding with any impeachment process."

According to him,   the lawmakers did not have any reason to sack the governor as the 1999 Constitution had spelt out the procedures and reasons that should be considered before such moves were made.

The speaker added that no lawmaker had been contacted or approached to impeach the governor.

Although  he acknowledged the possibility of friction  within the ruling  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the NGF election, he, however, said it was not the business of the assembly to meddle into the crisis in the NGF.

"As far as this assembly is concerned, we have no business with the crisis within the NGF. Everybody has freedom of interaction. Whatever they do is their business and they are doing it at their own peril,” he added.
