The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed the Nasarawa
State Governor, Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, for the incessant killings in the state.
The state chairman of the party, Hon. Yunanna Iliya, who
spoke at the inauguration of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council
(RMRDC) board at the weekend in Abuja, said as the chief security officer of
the state, Al-Makura, who was elected on the platform of the Congress for
Progressive Change (CPC), should be held responsible for security lapses in the
state.
About 65 security agents, comprising 55 police officers and
men as well as 10 operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) were killed in
the state last month by members from the Ombatse cult.
“Peaceful environment is the first catalyst for development.
As the chief security officer of the state, the constitution of Nigeria
squarely puts the onus of a safe and secured Nasarawa State in the hands of
Al-Makura. In the past one year, every part of the state has witnessed an
alarming deluge of various form of
clashes,” Iliya said.
He added that insecurity was alien to the state until the advent of the CPC-led
administration and urged the party to review its security policy to guarantee
peace in the state.
“They cannot turn round to say they don’t know those
individuals who are unleashing terror on the same people of this state; the
state has never had it this bad. It has suddenly become a haven for terrorists.
While we continue to commiserate and condole with the families of all those who
have lost their lives in the state, we are saddened and perturbed that these
daily incident has remained unstoppable. Let it be clear to all, the PDP in
this state holds the chief security officer of the state, that is the governor,
directly responsible for the continuous murder of our people in the state”, he
said.
However, Al-Makura, through his Director of Media and
Publicity, Iliyasu Ali-Yakubu, dismissed
the allegation, saying the PDP chairman had lost focus and was merely
politicising security issues in the state.
In a related development, Minister of Information, Mr.
Labaran Maku, at the weekend called on Christian leaders in the state to rise
up against the emerging trend of insecurity in the state.
Maku also appealed to youths to desist from being used as
agents of violence.
The minister in a statement by his Press Secretary, Joseph
Mutah, emphasised the essence of promoting peace, unity and the sanctity of
human life, as he prayed that the state should never again witness violence.
