Ogbonnaya Onu

The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has set up a committee to screen and present candidates for the leadership slots  in the yet-to-be registered All Progressives Congress (APC).

Rising from its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held  Saturday  at the party's National Secretariat in Abuja,  the party resolved to constitute a high-powered committee headed by its National Chairman, Dr. ogbonnaya Onu with a mandate to conclude on behalf of the party other outstanding issues relating to the merger until APC is registered.

Other members of the committee include former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sherrif, Alhaji Tijani Tunmsa, (National Secretary), Alhaji Shuaibu Musa  (National Treasurer), Yobe Governor,  Ibrahim Gaidam, Zamfara Governor, Abdul Aziz Yari, Borno Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, Mallam Ibrahim Shearau, Senator Ahmed Rufai Sani, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, Alhaji Abdulrahman Adamu and Senator Bukar Ibrahim.

The mandate of the committee is to undertake the sharing of the APC national executive slots allocated to the party and to continue to act on behalf of ANPP in the merger negotiations until APC is registered.

The Onu committee is to swing into action immediately to be able to submit the names of the party's candidates at the resumed merger meeting fixed for Monday.

THISDAY gathered that the decision to form a new committee came in response to an alleged poor representation by the previous merger committee headed by Shekarau.

A reliable source told THISDAY that  based on the brewing crisis of confidence, and in order to avoid being short-changed at the remaining stages of the  merger process, the leadership felt there was need to rejig the composition of the merger committee.

The positions allotted to ANPP in the APC include National Secretary , National Financial Secretary, Deputy National Organising Secretary, National Welfare Secretary, Deputy National Publicity Secretary,  two Vice Chairmen and two ex-officio members.
Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Sherrif said a committee was set up to understudy the positions allotted to the party in APC and divide it among party members.

"Our decision is also to continue with the merger plans to the logical end.  Our meeting was a single agenda meeting to talk about the merger, what has happened so far and to discuss the way forward.  The position of ANPP is that we should constitute a committee of the leaders of the party to share the positions, " he said.

Asked when the sharing of offices would be completed, the former Borno State governor said everything about the nomination of candidates for APC interim  leadership positions would be completed latest by Monday.

Sheriff said the meeting went well without any major disagreement, adding "In politics, either in Nigeria or elsewhere there are bound to be variance in opinion but decisions are usually based on amicably agreed positions".

Onu while  delivering what looked like a valedictory speech at the NEC meeting warned against complacency if the opposition coalition hoped to dislodge the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) from office come 2015.

He recounted his experiences in the effort to midwife the merger and pleaded for the understanding of all those that may have been offended by some his decisions and actions.
