The Kano State Government has said arrangements have been
concluded to ban street begging by sending away all the street beggars in the
state, especially children (Almajiris), who are not from the state to their
respective states or countries of origin.
The Commander General of the Hisbah Board, Malam Aminu
Ibrahim Daurawa, who disclosed this monday in Kano, said the state government
was ready to send an executive bill to the state House of Assembly to enact a
law that would ban all forms of street begging in the state
“Arrangements have been concluded by the state government to
ban street begging and send away all street beggars (Almajiris) that are not
Kano indigenes to their states of origin,” he said.
He described as embarrassing a situation whereby deported
street beggars from abroad are taken straight to Malam Aminu Kano International
Airport (MAKIA), thinking that all black street beggars are from Kano.
Daurawa, who stated that a recent survey of street beggars
in the state revealed that 65 per cent of them were not indigenes of the state,
said those who were not Nigerians would also be deported to their countries in
order for peace to reign in the state.
Investigation also revealed 65 per cent of Almajiris were
not indigenes of the state and where from other states and neighbouring
countries who constitute nuisance in the state.
Meanwhile, the state Refuse Management and Sanitation Board
(REMASAB) has said the board has evacuated about 8,000 tonnes of refuse daily
from Kano metropolis in the last three months.
The Managing Director of the board, Alhaji Abdullahi Bichi,
told journalists yesterday that the daily evacuation was to avoid flooding in
the current rainy season and further that the daily generation of refuse was
4,000 tonnes, adding that 400 tractors were used to clear the accumulated
waste.
He also noted that the board created 250 collection centres
in the city, which gave some sanity in the collaboration of the board and
residents towards ensuring a healthy environment in Kano
Bichi, however, called on the public to cooperate with the
state government in its move of rid the state off of dirty material, saying it
had become necessary because government alone could not provide a good hygienic
environment
