The Delta State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) Thursday endorsed the suspension
of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Godsday Orubebe.
Orubebe, alongside nine others from the Burutu Local
Government Area chapter of the party
were suspended by the local chapter for offences ranging from anti-party
activities as well as fostering disrepute, contempt and hatred within the party
ahead of the 2015 elections.
The minister had since described his suspension as baseless, illegal and lacking in merits.
But the state chairman of the party, Chief Peter Nwaoboshi,
said yesterday in Asaba that the notice
of the minister’s suspension had just reached his office, adding that if
governors could be suspended, there was no reason why the party could not
discipline an errant minister.
“Discipline must be enforced in the party. If two governors could be suspended, why not
a minister? The law is not a respecter of anybody. Nobody is above the law or
the constitution of the party. If the minister is found wanting, he has the
right to appeal his suspension. The party provides for that. So, it will be
treated on merit,” he added.
He called on party faithful to remain calm and law abiding
while the matter lasted.
