Amaechi |
By: CHRIS ANUCHA, Port Harcourt
The crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rivers
State, has taken a new dimension with the call for the immediate resignation of
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. The man behind the call for Amaechi’s
resignation is an elder statesman and top notcher of the PDP in the state,
Prince Emma Anyanwu.
According to Prince Anyanwu, events of the week which
resulted in the sack of G.U. Ake-led executive by an Abuja court, swearing in
of Felix Obuah and others and the suspension of the Chairman of Obio/Akpor
Local Government Chairman, Timothy Nsirim and 17 councillors, were indications
that Amaechi had lost control of the party in the state. He also said the
unsolicited crowd that trooped out to Aba Road, to welcome Obuah was testimony of
the acceptance of change of leadership in the state.
The politician recalled series of efforts he and other
prominent leaders in the country made to reconcile the governor and his former
Chief of Staff and Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, but to no
avail. He, however, blamed their inability to reconcile the duo on the governor
and further accused him of running government of exclusion. The governor, he
insisted, was running government of exclusion. He disclosed how the governor
bluntly refused to shift grounds, heed advice from elders or create room for
compromise. Anyanwu said: “In all these, I came to the conclusion that my
efforts and that of well meaning Nigerians, who joined me to resolve this over
lingered disagreement with the elders of the party was caused by Amaechi’s
inability to listen to advice from elders on issues that border on inclusion
and mutual respect for one another in the affairs of the party in the state.
In conclusion, the governor has now lost control and
management of the state. He has lost the heart of the party on which he was
elected into office.” “This situation has also resulted in the dissolution of
Obio/Akpor Local Government Area and elected councillors. Based on all these
and other issues on ground, I call on him to immediately resign as governor of
Rivers State to allow peace to reign.” He said it was during crisis that a true
leader exhibited his quality of leadership, by listening to complaints and
grievances of the aggrieved party with a view to reaching compromise in the
interest of all. According to him, the governor had not been able to do that.
He debunked the allegation that the opposition against Amaechi was because of
his refusal to share money accruing to the state to individuals and groups as
was the practice by previous administrations.
