Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Enugu State
Police Command, yesterday smashed an eight-man kidnap syndicate.
The gang was said to have been behind some of the
kidnappings within the South-east region including the recent kidnap of the
Vice Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT),
Professor Cyprian Onyeji. Daily Trust learnt that following the kidnap of Prof.
Onyeji on August 15, 2012, the agents of the anti-kidnap squad intensified
search for the kidnappers.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere
Amaraizu, said the kidnappers were arrested after a heavy gun battle between
them and security operatives at one Safety Hotel located in Uwani area of Enugu
around 1.30am.
“The suspected kidnappers confessed that they arrived Enugu
alongside their gang leader and other members earlier in the day from Port
Harcourt, to execute an operation. They also confessed that they were behind
the kidnap of the ESUT VC. It was those
arrested in a commercial bus at Awgu that led the anti-kidnap squad to Safety
Hotel, Uwani, where a hot battle ensued between the hoodlums and security agents.
At the end of the battle, one Ezebilo Ihiemere alias Gago, Ifeanyi Kingsley
Edeh, Ani Chidiebere,Udeonu Ernest and Chibuzor Eze were arrested while one
Chiboy escaped from the roof top of a three storey building with serious gun
injury” Amaraizu said.
He called on hospital workers to be on the lookout for any
patient with serious bullet wounds, and to report same to the police. He
commended other security agencies, the media and members of the public for
their cooperation.
Amaraizu said items recovered from the gang include a
Volkswagen Vento car with registration No Aq 780 BRS, two Ak47 riffles and five
loaded magazines with 52 rounds of ammunition.
