House of Representatives |
Cracks may have begun to appear in the House of
Representatives, as it declared yesterday that there is no motion before it to
commence impeachment proceedings against President Goodluck Jonathan over
dismal implementation of the 2012 budget.
House Deputy Chairman on Media and Public Affairs, Victor
Ogene, told LEADERSHIP that no motion regarding the impeachment threat was
presently before the Lower House.
Also, the lawmaker denied reports of an extension of the
September 18 resumption date from scheduled two-month long annual recess.
“I can tell right away that in the House of Representatives,
we are eager to get back to work. We are not even contemplating extending even
by an hour.” He said.
Ogene (Anambra/APGA) insisted that what was being bandied as
an impeachment threat was not a resolution of the Lower House but a personal
contribution of a lawmaker on July 19 plenary.
“As we speak, there is no motion regarding impeachment
before the House of Representatives. What happened remained the issue of how
far the 2012 budget has been implemented in terms of releases, award of
contracts etc.” Ogene stated.
He added, “there was never an impeachment threat. What we
had was a directive to the executive that we are not happy with the slow pace
of implementation of the 2012 budget and that all efforts should be put in gear
to ensure that we have 100% implementation by September.”
It will be recalled that before federal lawmakers proceeded
on the annual recess in July, the Lower House Minority Leader, Femi
Gbajabiamila (Lagos/ACN), who came under privilege, led lawmakers in threats to
begin impeachment proceedings against President Goodluck Jonathan if the 2012
Budget is not implemented 100 per cent by September.
Already, the Speaker, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has instructed
the 89 House Standing Committees, to conduct a thorough appraisal of the status
of the implementation of the 2012 budget.
