Delta Police Boss Celebrates Low Crime Wave at Christmas

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba has said he was grateful to God for relative low crime-wave particularly during the last Christmas celebration across the state.

Aduba also reiterated as subsisting, the ban on the use of all forms of firecracker, popularly called “Banger” or “Knockout”, during festivities like Christmas and New Year.

Speaking with THISDAY on telephone, the state police boss said that the police authorities were happy that the relatively high rate of crime often associated with the annual celebration of Christmas was absent this year.

“I thank almighty God who has helped us achieve this. The strategy we put in place to safeguard the lives and property of the people across the state especially during this festive season is working; and, I thank God for this,” Aduba said.

He however expressed appreciation for the cooperation of communities, particularly the different community vigilance groups, towards ensuring that various crimes in the state were reduced to the barest minimum.

Although, he could not ascribe the apparent reduction of crime specifically to the recent proscription of the use of commercial motorcycles or “okada” in major cities of Delta State including Asaba, Warri and the adjoining Effurun metropolis, he said that the ban may have helped as there were cases of use of okada by criminals in the past to carry out their nefarious activities during the Yuletide.

Aduba however stressed that “the ban on the use of fireworks in all parts of state is still in force”, warning that the police would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone caught flouting the order.

Meanwhile, THISDAY gathered that the Delta State Command spokesman, Mr. Charles Muka, a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) has been redeployed to the police headquarters in Abuja.

A new spokesman would be announced for the state police command in due course.
