'Shell Not About to Leave Nigeria' ...Donates to Flood Victims

Mutiu Sumonu

Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company, Mr. Mutiu Sumonu has said that contrary to information making the rounds that they are folding their operations in the Niger Delta and Nigeria, their business was still thriving and would continue.

He disclosed this in Ugheli where he led a delegation to make donations from SPDC and its subsidiaries to flood victims camped at the Oharisi Primary School rehabilitation camp in Ugheli North Local Government where he donated $1 million to the International Red Cross to alleviate the suffering of those displaced by flood.

Samonu described the business relationship between SPDC and Nigeria as cordial and rewarding and said people should discountenance the information that they were winding up in the Niger Delta region.

Apart from the money already donated for procurement of items to ameliorate the suffering of the displaced in the camp, he said the company will match any contribution made by their staff who were already making individual contributions towards providing for them.
The Shell boss after touring the displaced people camp said he was shocked at the level of destruction and displacement cause by the flood and pledged to do anything within the power of the company to soothe the nerve of the affected who he noticed were mainly women and children.

“I think the flooding is really, really unfortunate. Indeed, I see it as a national tragedy. However, I must say I am very impressed by the way the different people from all works of life have really risen to the challenge. I also see, honestly, a good spirit of sharing. Thousands of children, the young and the elderly all struggling to make it together."
