Former Vice President of the World Bank, Prof. Oby
Ezekwesili, has taken governors of the Niger Delta region to task over the poor
state of education in the region.
She said despite the huge resources that have accrued to the
region in recent time, little had been done to elevate the sector.
Ezekwesili said this at a lecture she delivered at the
BRACED (an acronym for Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta)
states 2012 Education Summit at Government House in Port Harcourt.
She noted that there has been a general rot in the education
system in the country and said the situation would not change until the
nation’s leaders took better interest in education.
“When a society goes anti-education, that society is on a
descent to destruction. That is what is happening to us. We all built this
society that we find ourselves in today. We said education did not matter but
how much a person has. We destroyed the values of our society,” she said.
She spoke on the topic: “From the Love of Oil Money to the
Love of Ideas”.
She noted that the Niger Delta region had received about
N700 billion in the first nine months of this year and queried how the money
had impacted on education.
Her words: “The sub-region has received about N700 billion
in the first nine months of this year. But what does this mean for education.
When a system is dysfunctional and rather than sort it out, you go for the
quick response of putting more money. That is not a solution and it will never
solve the problem. It will only lead to well-funded dysfuctionality."
