Boko Haram Disorganised Me – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan and former president Olusegun Obasanjo today in Abuja

President Goodluck Jonathan today admitted, for the first time, that his government ground to a halt before it could take the first step, and he blamed Boko Haram for it.
Mr. Jonathan made the confession at the 60th National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party.
"During [the electoral] campaign, our emphasis was more on job creation, power but now what worries us most is security,” he said.  "This is because you must be alive before you will eat food”
He described security as “very, very fundamental,” saying, “If you are not safe, you can't even think of hunger because a dead person does not need food.”
The President told senior party members that although he had promised to focus on job creation and power, he had been forced to change government policy to focus on security due to the activities of the violent militant sect.
In convoluted remarks, he said, "If you look at this issue of Boko Haram, for the past three weeks, except the incident in Plateau State, which of course is unfortunate but  has nothing to do with Boko Haram, we will continue to work with Governor Jonah Jang and other leaders from the state to make sure that we resolve the crisis in Plateau State. That has nothing to do with Boko Haram.
"But outside that, we would see that there are some trends, there is some hope and God willing, the issue of Boko Haram will also come down."
Mr. Jonathan did not comment on his promise in April to vanquish the militants by June, a promise which he did not fulfill.  He did not apologize for that, either.
“Did Boko Haram also persuade him not to give a damn about corruption, for which both his government and his party are the most famous?” a political analyst asked in Abuja today.  “If he says Boko Haram brought him to a standstill, did they also tell him he should not provide personal example, such as declaring his assets or telling his wife it is a shame to live in Abuja and claim a job in Abuja she cannot possibly honour?”
A newspaper columnist, commenting on Mr. Jonathan’s confession, reminded SaharaReporters that it was only recently at the “Media Chat” that Jonathan told Nigerians they will start enjoying his success in 2013.
“The cows are coming home to roost now,” he said.  “Boko Haram did not stop him from buying himself executive jets or budgeting nearly N1billion for feeding himself or repeatedly traveling with hundreds of hangers-on to foreign capitals to collect huge estacode payments.  He is now telling Nigerians the militants are the ones stopping him from fulfilling his electoral promises!”

How Jonathan’s Candidate Won Nigerian Bar Association's Presidency

Okey

Okey Wali (SAN), a lawyer massively supported with funds by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, today emerged as the president-elect of the Nigerian Bar Association in an election marred by the Jonathan administration’s meddling, widespread bribery of delegates, and other irregularities.
Mr. Wali, a former Commissioner for Justice in Rivers State and a close aide to Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa, scored 688 votes. His rival, Emeka Ngige (SAN), was credited with 449 votes, even though he entered the election as the favorite.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the Jonathan administration had budgeted and spent more than N1 billion to shore up Mr. Wali. Our sources alleged that the Jonathan regime took over the entire Sheraton Hotel in Abuja and doled out free rooms, cash and food to delegates who consented to support Mr. Wali. In addition, several delegates accused the outgoing NBA leadership, especially Joseph Daudu, the exiting president, of manipulating the voters register. “It was only yesterday at noon that Daudu released the list of eligible voters,” said one of the lawyers.

Several sources asserted that many names were omitted from the list of delegates. “There’s a branch from Onitsha with 20 delegates, but only twelve names were accredited,” said one source. “By contrast, a branch from Port Harcourt with 27 listed delegates had 63 delegates voting.” Supporters of Mr. Ngige also stated that fifteen new branches were registered but were prevented from voting at the last minute.
They accused Lanke Odogiyan (SAN), chair of the electoral committee, of manipulating the process to ensure fraudulent victory for Mr. Wali. Mr. Odogiyan and Mr. Wali reportedly belong to an elite lawyers’ club called “Juris Credo.”

Several sources within the Presidency and in the judiciary had disclosed that the Jonathan administration was determined to frustrate an independent candidate to lead the NBA. Our sources revealed that the Presidency handed out N100,000 to some delegate and 250,000 to several branches of the NBA. The NBA has 88 branches, with a minimum of 10 delegates from each branch.
“It is a tragedy that the Presidency would spend outrageous amounts of public funds in order to foist an unpopular candidate who is the government’s lackey as NBA leader,” said one of the disaffected lawyers.

“The Presidency reasoned that an independent NBA president cannot be trusted to play along if there are glaring human rights abuses or instances of corruption and other betrayals of public trust  within the judiciary,” said a source, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who backed Mr. Ngige. “”For that reason, the administration decided to throw its financial muscle behind Chief Wali  by crooked means.” The source, who insisted that the Jonathan team distributed cash to many delegates to buy support for Mr. Wali, added that he was dismayed to see some lawyers “selling their conscience for a mess of porridge.”
Our sources disclosed that the team put together by the Presidency to “campaign” for Mr. Wali was led by Attorney General of the Federation Adoke Bello. Other members of the team included Michael Aondoaaka, the disgraced former Attorney General under the administration of the late Umaru Yar’Adua, and Joseph Daudu, the outgoing NBA president. In addition, such lawyers as Damian Dodo, Alex Izinyon, Wale Olanipekun and Dele Adesina reportedly worked with the government’s team to enthrone Mr. Jonathan’s choice.

A source in the Ministry of Justice disclosed to SaharaReporters that, as a token of gratitude for the role Aondoakaa played in installing Mr. Wali, the Jonathan administration has promised to restore Mr. Aondoakaa’s SAN status before the end of this year. Mr. Aondoakaa was stripped of the SAN position as punishment for his shameful professional conduct during the Yar’Adua administration.
“I knew that the government had mobilized heavily for Chief Wali, but I also expected that members of a profession as noble as the law would be able to rise above the influence of cheap money,” said another lawyer, who identified himself as a member of a progressive wing that wanted an independent candidate to emerge triumphant.

The source bemoaned the future of the NBA, claiming that Mr. Wali “will certainly toe the line and sing the tune of the government that sponsored his election.”
The NBA’s national conference held in Abuja. Mr. Wali will be sworn in next month to take over from Mr. Daudu.

Lady Gaga Debuts Creepy, Nude Ad For New ‘Fame’ Fragrance

Gaga

Leave it to Lady Gaga to take what could be a tasteful nude and make it as creepy as possible. To promote her debut fragrance called Fame (presumably named after her first album The Fame), the perfume's freshly released print ad features a completely nude Gaga barely covered by strategically placed tiny men crawling all over her!
This certainly isn't the first time that Lady Gaga has appeared practically nude, regularly flashing the goods in strange and skimpy couture pieces and even baring her breasts in fashion editorials (all artfully done, of course). But the fact that Gaga expressed some apprehension about her Fame ad via Twitter makes the image all the more intriguing. If the queen of shock pop is a little nervous, we all should brace ourselves.

The singer tweeted, "I won't lie I'm a bit nervous. Its been a while since I’ve shared some work with you. But I’m so proud of Steven+I, we really did not sleep! (sic)." She's referring to Steven Klein, the famed photographer who is known for his edgy, high fashion editorials, designer ad campaigns and has, ironically, worked very closely with Madonna on a number of projects.
At first glance the ad looks like a "Birth of Venus" body beautiful nude of Lady Gaga with something like tarantulas crawling all over her. But upon closer inspection, the infestation are a hoard of body-by-Zeus, Robert Mapplethorpe-esque muscle men free climbing the singer's body. Gaga looks great the men individually look great. But the way everything was superimposed, the ad could only be the most gratuitous fetish fantasy for some, or a terrifying nightmare for others--not much room for any shade of gray. Just the way Gaga intended, surely.

Pakistani police arrest man for burying baby alive

Pakistani police arrested a man accused of burying his newborn daughter alive because she was physically deformed, officials said Saturday.

The shocking incident illustrates the sometimes extreme prejudices in Pakistan against children, especially girls that are born with any type of physical deformities. They are often seen as shameful for the family, especially in the rural, poorer parts of the country where they are viewed as a drain on the family.

Mohammed Anwar, a police officer in the city of Khanewal in the eastern Punjab province, said the child was born Thursday at a hospital in the nearby town of Kacha Khoh. After seeing his newborn daughter, the father told relatives that the baby was born dead and organized a funeral service, said Shamshad Khalid, the town's police chief.

The child started crying during the service and the presiding cleric told the father to take the girl to the hospital, Khalid said. Instead, the man, identified by police as Chand Khan, buried her. Residents alerted the authorities after seeing the father taking the baby to the graveyard, after which police raided the man's house and arrested him on a murder charge.

Khan, who has four other children, did not tell his wife about his plans to get rid of the child, the police chief said, adding that the wife was still at the hospital when the baby was buried. Mohammed Farooq, a doctor at al-Shifa hospital in Kacha Khoh, said he had seen the child after her birth. He said she was healthy and alive but had a fairly large head and "abnormal" features.

"I am a doctor at the same hospital where this child was born. This man came to me yesterday with a request that I should do something to dispose of his child, but I snubbed him and said get out," Farooq said. "No one has the right to kill anyone because of his or her physical deformity."

He said the child's funeral service was held inside a mosque, and the child's cry drew the attention of the cleric and those who were attending the funeral. Pakistani human rights activist Farzana Bari also condemned the incident. Raghab Naeemi, a prominent Pakistan religious scholar, demanded a stern punishment for the man.

Some parents in Pakistan have been known to kill their children out of extreme poverty and an inability to take care of them, but such incidents are rare. Police say they will exhume the child's body and perform an autopsy. The father could be sentenced to death if he's found guilty of killing his daughter.

3 Americans killed in French plane crash

An aviation company says that three Americans who died when a private plane crashed in southern France were the plane's crew.
Universal Jet Aviation said Saturday that it would not release the names of the dead until their families had been notified. The three — two men, aged 60 and 24, and a 30-year-old woman — died in the crash while their plane was landing Friday at Le Castellet airport in southern France.
The American company said there were no passengers on board. An investigation into the cause of the crash has been opened.
